Saints Row 4 launches Steam Workshop for mods
Guns! Clothes! Cheats!
Back in the day, to install mods we needed to trudge through the digital snow -- upcyberhill, both ways -- and we'd consider ourselves lucky if we only got caned thrice for mistyping DOS commands. The youth of today are spoiled, simply clicking a few buttons in the Steam Workshop to install and play mods. Where's the graft? I swear, some of these kids playing mods these days haven't even lost fingers to cyberfrostbite. Fine then, go on, go and play Saints Row 4 [official site] mods easily with its fancy new official Steam Workshop support, see if I care. The game's on sale now too.
Not many mods are live in the SR4 Steam Workshop yet but presumably more modders will be bringing their work over from other hosts. You can already find new (and old) clothes, new weapons, more paint colours, more homies, cheats, and a fair bit of other assorted wackiness. Hopefully the increased attention will encourage folks to make more mods too.
Volition said some words through their fingers and keyboards:
"There were many challenges in implementing Steam Workshop support since the game was not originally designed to support modding. A handful of dedicated Volition devs worked on this in their free time to update the engine and remove memory restrictions, as well as finding a way for individual mods to interact and work correctly with each other without the need for running special tools. It was all a labor of love for our fans, and we're incredibly excited to see the crazy content you come up with!"
They also give a shout out to the modders and players living virtually at Saints Row Mods, "who worked with us on creating and improving the tools, along with all the testing and feedback over the last few years."
The Workshop is only live for the Windows version now but Volition hope to bring it to Linux too.
To celebrate all this, the game's on sale on Steam. £2.74/3,74€/$3.74 is a good price for the best superhero game ever made.
